Minwax® Complete is a two-in-one stain and protective finish that provides superior durability for hardwood floors. It can be used over bare floors or previously finished floors.
Minwax® Complete saves time compared to staining with one product and protecting with another. Minwax® Complete can be used over bare wood. It can also be used over an existing polyurethane finish; over a properly prepared floor, this product allows you to change the color of your floor without sanding down to bare wood. It lets you finish your floor in one day, does not require sanding between coats, and cleans up easily with soap and water.
All wood reacts to stains differently due to its natural color and pore size, and these characteristics will affect the final look of your floor. Be sure to test the color on a hidden spot, such as in a closet, to see how the new finish will look on the floor. If you are applying it over an existing finish, the result will be a combination of the old and new colors.
No sanding is required between coats as long as less than 24 hours have passed since the previous coat was applied. If Minwax® Complete has been allowed to dry for 24 hours or more, a light sanding between coats is required. Do not sand excessively, otherwise you risk removing a layer of color, which is mixed with the protective finish, from the floor.
Yes, as long as products containing shellac, lacquer, wax or stearates have not been applied to the floor and the existing finish is in good condition with no chipping, peeling or worn through areas. If these conditions are met, then you can lightly sand the existing finish using a 150-180 grit screen to prepare it for the addition of Minwax® Complete. However, if you want to lighten the color of your existing floor, you will need to remove the existing finish before applying Minwax® Complete.
Use a synthetic painter’s pad. Make sure to wet it evenly with Minwax® Complete. Apply an even coat following the entire length of the floor boards in the direction of the wood grain. Do not stop in between boards and always apply from one end of the room to the other. To prevent lap marks, make sure to maintain a wet edge. Do not allow one stroke of your finish to dry before applying the next.
If you have factory finished flooring, it’s best to consult a flooring professional before undertaking any floor finishing project.
